In the vegetable garden its time to pull out the finished summer crops and prepare the garden beds for winter. Vegetables to sow now are broad beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, parsnip and spinach. Pumpkins and marrows that are ripening on the vine should be turned over so that the underside can ripen. Cuttings of Bougainvilleas, and Hibiscus, (pencil thick and about 15cm long and preferably with a heal of old wood), can be taken now for propagation. This technique may also apply to most plants now especially natives. You may still need to use a rooting hormone and a good brand of propagation mix to get the best results. Bob Farlow at Tambo Vale Nursery & Gardens is on hand to give you the appropriate advice and techniques. Autumn is the ideal time to plant native plants including tubes as the warm soil which lags the air temperature by 3 months allows for good root development. It is still preferable to use tree guards and mulch mats on small plants such as tubes and 140mm pots to protect them from rabbits, drying winds and to accelerate plant growth before the cooler weather. Now is the time to visit your local nursery to select deciduous trees that exhibit the best Autumn colours. Continue to deadhead your roses and selectively prune them to prolong flowering into April and May. CROSSWORD SUDOKU DIFFICULTY: H 2022 DIFFICULTY: H H H H H 2023 ACROSS DOWN 1. Funeral garlands 4.
